Deluxe Manor Black and White - Silk Wallpaper Design

I recently showed our wallpaper sample books to three friends who wanted to view the designs together in person. They were all attracted to the same designs which at first surprised me. But then I thought,  it’s only natural that some friends will gravitate towards the same designs and like the same things; that’s why they’re friends after all, right?  And perhaps they influence each other when they express their approval of a particular design and talk about the designs they’re not attracted to.

Then I started to wonder, can friends choose the same wallpaper designs for their home? What about furniture, tiles, paint colours, splashbacks, cushions and other homewares?

What’s the correct etiquette in this situation?

Would you be annoyed with a friend who copied your home styling choices?

Here are my initial thoughts but I’m more interested in knowing what you think!

  1. If friends agree it’s OK, it’s OK, but only if they genuinely agree it’s OK. You don’t want it to lead to resentment later.
  2. The person who loves it the best gets it. If someone is not completely in love with a design, they’ll concede, back off and let the other person have it. If they all love it equally, see point 3!
  3. The person who found it first gets first dibs. For example, in this situation, the person who found our website and organised the viewing of the wallpaper samples should get first pick of the wallpaper designs.
  4. Consider if it has to be exactly the same. Can you or they choose a different colour? Similar design?

What do you think is the correct etiquette in this situation?

Edit

Thought I’d pop back here with a link to an interesting discussion I had about this topic on the Decorating Forum. There were some great responses from the wonderful ladies there. From feeling flattered to annoyed to wondering about the psychology of choosing favourite designs when you’re with a group of people.

And for the record, in the end they all settled for different designs.

  1. Killing them isn’t an option?

Instead of calling dibs, one calls shotgun then *bang* one less copy cat and unfortunately one less customer.

Maybe Silk Interiors needs a “Double Secret Backup Sample Book”

    • I’ve had a lot of interesting responses. Rock Paper Scissors is just one 🙂

  2. Challenging Dilemma, Sandra.
Like my friend who was first to cal her daughter Sophie, and my other friend faced a choice of sticking with her choice of Sophie or moving on to Keira.
    (I would’ve stuck with Sophie).
You’re right – staking a claim or ownership on things out there is an inherently dangerous business, fraught with exclusion and missed opportunities.
